JD Vance: Iran Negotiations Constructive but Red Lines Remain Unresolved
WASHINGTON: US Vice President JD Vance reaffirmed that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains the United States’ top priority amid ongoing diplomatic engagement.
Speaking after the second round of nuclear negotiations with Iran, Vance described the discussions as “constructive in some respects” but stressed that Iran has yet to engage on certain red lines outlined by former President Donald Trump. He did not specify the red lines, citing presidential discretion.
The second round of talks followed initial US-Iran dialogue aimed at reviving constraints on Iran’s nuclear program, which has been a point of tension since the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018. According to officials, the current discussions are focused on limiting uranium enrichment, increasing transparency through International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspections, and preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapons capability.
Vance noted that while the talks have made some progress, the ultimate authority to end diplomatic efforts lies with the president. “We will continue working, but the president can determine if diplomacy has run its course,” he said, adding that Washington remains committed to exploring diplomatic solutions before taking other measures.
Analysts say the discussions are part of a broader US strategy to maintain regional stability in the Middle East, support nonproliferation goals, and coordinate with allies in Europe and the Gulf regarding Iran’s nuclear activities.
